Brush fire in Suffolk sends heavy smoke into sky

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A brush and structure fire in northern Suffolk sent a tall plume of black smoke into the sky Tuesday afternoon.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews were called out to the scene near the 6900 block of Armstead Road, shortly before 3 p.m.

The fire is about one mile into the wooded area past the entrance gate to the Hampton Roads Sanitation District Nansemond Wastewater Treatment plant.

The fire burned a vacant structure and an acre of woodlands. The fire was called under control at 6 p.m. It remains unclear how it started.

There were no reported injuries.
