Bullets fly in Hampton neighborhood

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Crime concerns have rocked a Hampton neighborhood.

Police say a woman was driving down Bay Avenue in the Wythe neighborhood Tuesday night when someone in a red car started shooting at her car. The victim’s car was hit twice, but luckily she wasn’t hurt.

The 1900 block of Bay Avenue is one small block long, but Tuesday night not quiet, as gunfire broke the evening silence. 18-year-old Jafari Mitchell, who happened to be out walking in the area, heard the shots: “It sounded like pow, pow, pow, pow,” he told WAVY.com.

The victim, a 64-year-old Hampton woman, told police the suspect just began shooting. Mitchell said the cars could have even been side-by-side for a few seconds before the shooting began.”

“I had been in a field, but ran to that gray trash can … when we heard some gunshots, I ran just like this and I fell right here,” he said while demonstrating his dive behind a fence.

Mitchell said he saw the car drive by and said it may have been a Mercedes. “It rolled right by, but I couldn’t see in because it had tinted windows,” he said.

Hampton police would not give any more information on the victim, nor the location of her damaged car, but Mitchell was running fast Tuesday night.

“I felt shock because my heart, when I heard the gunshots, my heart dropped, and I fell to me knees behind the gate because the bullets could be flying everywhere,” he said.

For Mitchell, Tuesday night was another night to think about guns: “There are too many people dying in the world. We don’t need it. We need to stop the violence and stuff, that’s all I know,” he said.
