ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — Elizabeth City police are investigating two shootings that happened within three hours Monday evening.

The first happened around 5:15 p.m. on Second Street. Officers found 18-year-old Mushad Gary on a porch. Police say Gary had been shot in the head. He later died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Police Investigators have questioned several people of interest and have placed certain individuals at the crime scene during the incident, but no arrests have been made, according to Elizabeth City Police Chief Eddie Buffaloe Jr.

Investigators are still interviewing people and sorting out evidence in the Second Street case.

The second shooting happened a little less than three hours later on Peartree Road. Officers found 25-year-old Troy Avery in New Hollywood cemetery. Someone shot him in the leg.

Avery told police he was walking with a friend on Peartree Road when an unknown vehicle drove by and shot once. That’s when he said he went into the cemetery to hide.

No suspects or motive have been identified in the Peartree Road case.

If you know anything about either shooting, give police a call.
