Tattoo artists from across the country come to Va. Beach festival

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Friday was the first day of the Virginia Beach Tattoo Festival at the city’s convention center.

If you’re at the Oceanfront this weekend, the buzz will be at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Tattoo artists from all over the country are in town to work their magic, and it won’t cost you a plane ticket.

“They have a chance to get tattooed by people they can’t get tattooed by in Hampton Roads,” said Nate Hudson, with the Virginia Beach Tattoo Festival. “It allows them to, instead of travelling to California, they can get tattooed by people right here.”

Tattoo fanatics say, sometimes, you can’t stop at just one. They also say each one tells a story, and many times it’s more than skin deep.

“I’m getting a ribbon for my daughter,” said Kari Williams, a festival attendee. “She passed away from a birth defect called anencephaly, so I’m getting the anencephaly ribbon with her name on it.”

But that isn’t Williams’ only tattoo. “To me, most of my tattoos are like sentimental, and so it’s very addicting,” she said.

But the bottom line at the festival is this: whether it’s your first, fifth or fifteenth tattoo, the artists will let you wear your emotions on your sleeve.

The tattoo festival ran until 11 p.m. Friday and opens back up Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The last chance to check it out is Sunday, between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
