Officer’s sudden resignation causes DUI cases to be dismissed

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — 10 On Your Side is working to find out more about a Virginia Beach police officer who suddenly resigned from the department. Officials aren’t saying why the officer quit, but WAVY.com learned Friday that it had a big impact on Virginia Beach court cases earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney was told the officer who worked in the second precinct at the Oceanfront had resigned. That day, the officer was scheduled to testify in court for several cases in which he arrested suspects for DUI.

Macie Pridgen, with the Commonwealth’s attorney, said the office had to dismiss nearly ten DUI cases because they had evidentiary concerns about prosecuting them. WAVY.com was told the cases could be brought back, if prosecutors decide to do so.

Pridgen told 10 On Your Side her office is also looking at the officer’s remaining cases to see if they will be able to proceed in prosecuting them.

The officer at the center of this situation will not face criminal charges, according to Pridgen. That’s why 10 On Your Side is not going to release the officer’s name, at this point.
