Va. Beach warning residents of public utilities scam

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Public Utilities are alerting the community of a new scam.

Officials say a citizen of the Glenwood area reported a red notice was left in her yard regarding a leak in her water line. A blue line was also spray painted on the ground, from the water meter to her home.

The victim called the telephone number posted on the notice and was told the leak was found while checking lines in the neighborhood. She was then told that the cost of the repairs would be over $1,000. According to officials, the woman was suspicious and called Virginia Beach Public Utilities, a crew responded to the home and found the water line inside the meter box had been intentionally damaged.

A second report of the same scam was reported within a few days in the Bellamy Plantation area.
