Suffolk official: Dead mammal on side of road not a seal

Report It/James Nicholson

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — City officials say what was initially thought to be a dead seal on the side of a Suffolk road has been confirmed as a partially-decomposed pit bull.

Diana Klink, with the city of Suffolk, said officials were made aware Thursday of a carcass that looked like a marine mammal at the intersection of Harbourview Boulevard and Bridge Road (Route 17). While VDOT maintains that section of roadway, Klink said a Suffolk Public Works crew went to remove the 100 to 150 pound carcass.

Klink said Suffolk Animal Control determined the animal was actually a black and white pit bull. She said the initial confusion stemmed from the appearance of the carcass, which had been affected by heat and decomposition. The dog’s legs had also been tucked under its body.

Klink said it’s a mystery how the dog got there. It’s also unclear how long the carcass was located there.
