NORFOLK (WAVY) – There wasn’t much offense at Harbor Park, but there was one defensive gem that made the night worth wile for the lucky 3,575 announced crowd in attendance. Holding a 3-0 lead over the Durham Bulls, the Norfolk Tides turned a 5-4-3 triple play in the eighth inning.
Durham’s Luke Maile drove a sharp grounder to third baseman Michael Almanzar, who scooped it up, threw to Rey Navarro at second and then on to Christian Walker at first to complete the play. According to the Tides’ twitter account, it’s the first play turned at Harbor Park since turned two in a span of three days against the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2009.
Coincidentally enough, Tides manager Ron Johnson was managing Pawtucket back then.
