VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A former Virginia Beach substitute teacher has been sentenced to perform 25 hours of community service and pay a $250 fine after slapping a student when the boy spilled water on the teacher’s cellphone and lesson plans.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Judge Deborah Bryan on Monday found 64-year-old Dennis Burt guilty of misdemeanor assault and battery in connection with the March 26 incident at Salem Middle School.
Burt says the 12-year-old student refused to move his books when asked to make space for another student, and then spilled the water.
Prosecutors say Burt struck the boy, causing him to cry.
Burt, a retired Navy veteran, says he was “horrified” by his actions and quickly sent school officials an email detailing what he had done.
