Exchange of gunfire ends in homicide, arrest

Al’Jae R. Walton

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police have determined two men exchanged gunfire the morning of August 2. One of the men died; the other is now behind bars.

Investigators found Richard Owens, 22, shot to death in the 900 block of Bagnall Road around 4:30 a.m. Officers were almost immediately called to another scene in the 800 block of E. Olney Road. At that location, 19-year-old Al’Jae Walton was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Detectives say the men shot at each other on Bagnall Road and Walton fled from the scene, but collapsed a few blocks away. He was taken to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several days.

On August 8, Walton was released from the hospital and taken to jail, where he was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Walton remains in incarcerated without bond.
