RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden officially kicked off training camp at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Gruden answered questions on multiple topics, even addressing what he wants from Redskins fans. “A lot of energy, man… There should be a lot of cheering going on.”

The big news that came down just a few hours before Gruden was scheduled to speak was linebacker Ryan Kerrigan’s multi-year contract extension. Kerrigan said he told his family about the deal Tuesday night, “This is an unbelievable experience. I don’t know if it’s quite hit me yet.” He added that he’s ready for the first day of Training Camp after undergoing a minor knee procedure over the offseason. “He can get to another level — we need to get him a chance to get to another level. … He’s going to get better,” said Gruden of Kerrigan.

Gruden said contract talks with left tackle Trent Williams are ongoing; “He’s going to work hard no matter what the contract situation is.”

WAVY News 10’s Sports Director Bruce Rader will be reporting live from Redskins Training Camp. Watch his coverage from Richmond beginning tonight at 6 p.m.
