FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested a man accused of attempting to murder a woman after he allegedly hit her with a microwave and a hand weight.

Investigators say 27-year-old Codi Terrell Batts of Rocky Mount, N.C. struck a woman in the face with his fists, attempted to strike her with a chain, threw a microwave at her, struck her in the face with a hand weight, bit her on her back and held her down on the bed and choked her.

Franklin police responded to the disturbance at the Days Inn on Armory Drive around 10:58 p.m. Tuesday. According to investigators, the 36-year-old woman was staggering in the parking lot asking for help. She told police Batts made threats to “kill her” and held her in the room against her will. He then fled in her car.

The victim was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital for treatment. She had significant injuries to her face.

Batts was stopped by police in Chesapeake later that night and charged with driving while intoxicated. Warrants from Franklin were also served on him and he was charged with attempted murder, strangulation, abduction and grand larceny of a motor vehicle.
