Tides are surging as trade deadline approaches

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Led by the “Big 3”, Christian Walker, Dariel Alvarez and pitcher Mike Wright–Orioles manager Buck Showalter has to be happy with his number one minor league team.

Walker, very possibly the O’s first baseman of the future, is the International League player of the week, batting over 400 with three home runs, four doubles and nine runs scored. With Orioles slugger Chris Davis figuring to be a very hot commodity in this winter’s free agent market, Walker could be starting next season in Baltimore.

Showalter could also use some more power in left field, and 26-year-old Cuban defector Dariel Alverez could help out there.
Alverez won the home run hitting contest at the AAA All Star Game a couple of weeks ago and could be very valuable as the Orioles make a late season drive towards the playoffs.

Leaving young right hander Mike Wright as possible trade bait this week. He’s 8-0 with the Tides and stated several games with Baltimore. Kevin Gausman, who has been up-and-down between Norfolk and Baltimore as well, could be dealt, too.

“Obviously everyone is looking at things and seeing what situations will happen,” Tides manager Ron Johnson said.”I don’t think anybody is really thinking about it, and I’ve had those clubs where guys were, but I don’t this bunch is like that, I don’t think they are sitting on the edge of their seats wondering if they are going to get traded.”

The trade deadline in Friday.
