Teens charged after police chase ends in crash in Norfolk

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A police pursuit that started in Chesapeake Monday morning ended about four miles away in a crash in Norfolk.

Officer Daniel Hudson with Norfolk police told WAVY.com Chesapeake police called for Norfolk police assistance after the chase that started in their city ended at the intersection of Chapel Street and E. Charlotte Street, shortly after 7 a.m.

Chesapeake police say, around 6:45 a.m., a concerned citizen called about a suspicious vehicle on Martin Avenue, in the South Norfolk area of Chesapeake. Officers were advised the vehicle may have been stolen. Police attempted to stop the vehicle near Atlantic Avenue and Myers Road, but the vehicle did not stop and officers pursued the vehicle into Norfolk.

“It was two Chesapeake Police hot behind him and then a Norfolk Police officer, then I started seeing an undercover police officer follow him also, then Chesapeake Police started pouring in from everywhere,” Vernon Griffin said.

Griffin was headed to a job interview in Norfolk when he says the driver and the officers flew past him.

“It was like three lanes of traffic. I was in maybe the second lane and first it was a car in the other lane and he moved over like slowly behind me, then the police and all them came along,” Griffin said.

He said it all happened fast and the outcome could have been different. “The guy was very lucky because he slipped through traffic just in time as the lanes changed.”

Police say once in Norfolk, the vehicle began to slow down and the driver and two passengers bailed from the vehicle. The car continued to move and hit a parked car along the 800 block of E. Charlotte Street.

Police say there were three males in the vehicle, two 16-year-olds and a 22-year-old. According to police, the 16-year-old driver abducted the 22-year-old.

The 22-year-old victim didn’t want to be identified but told 10 On Your Side the driver was his adopted brother. According to the victim, the driver picked him up from his girlfriend’s house in Chesapeake and was supposed to take him home in Norfolk when the chase started.

The 16-year-old driver was charged with abduction, felony eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle, obstruction of justice and no seat belt. The other teen was charged with obstruction of justice.
