CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Firefighters say a pile of mulch caught on fire inside a business in Chesapeake Monday.

Capt. Saunders with Chesapeake Fire tells WAVY.com crews were dispatched to the business at 416 Dominion Blvd., just before 11 a.m.

According to Saunders, the business, Clearfield MMG, works with mulch, and a huge pile inside the building caught on fire. However, the fire did not spread to the building.

Saunders said the fire was brought under control at 12:09 p.m. Crews cut holes in the roof to ventilate the building and used a bulldozer to remove the burned product.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Investigators say the cause of the fire appears to be heat generated after too much lime was added to the solidification process.

Northbound Dominion Blvd. reopened to traffic just before 4 p.m., but the exits at Dominion Lakes Boulevard remain closed. Chesapeake Public Works says northbound traffic will share the Dominion Lakes overpass with southbound traffic.
