VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach City Manager Jim Spore will step down from his position at the end of the year.

Spore announced his retirement Tuesday at a Virginia Beach City Council meeting, according to city spokesman Marc Davis. Council members honored Spore with a standing ovation.

“He has dedicated nearly 50 years of his life to public service; 24 of those years have been here in Virginia Beach,” Mayor Will Sessoms said after the announcement. “So, while [his retirement] wasn’t a surprise … it is still a loss of a great leader who helped this community to — literally — grow up.”

Spore has been city manager since 1991.

“If anyone has earned the right to retire knowing the job was well done, it is Jim Spore,” Sessoms continued.
