NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) — Look around Norfolk this weekend and you’re sure to see a lot of smiles. Two Navy ships are coming home after long deployments.
The USS Kauffman returns Sunday and the USS Oscar Austin docked Friday morning. WAVY.com was there when Sailor Robert Slaton met his three-month-old daughter, Riley, for the first time.
“This is Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, my anniversary all rolled in to one,” Slaton said.
The guided-missile destroyer returned to Naval Station Norfolk after its eight month deployment. There were 310 Sailors on board the USS Oscar Austin. They provided maritime interdiction and anti piracy protection around the Horn of Africa.
