Fire destroys chunk of Avon Motel

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. (WAVY) — Fire destroyed a large portion of the Avon Motel on Hatteras Island Wednesday.

Drew Pearson, emergency management director for Dare County, said a smoke alarm at the motel along N.C. 12 went off just before noon. A 911 caller then alerted emergency responders.

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department responded, and then all other volunteer firefighters on the island were called in. It took them about an hour and a half to knock down the flames.

 

There were no injuries reported. Person said there were people in the motel at the time the fire started, and some people were displaced.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
