PD: Driver fled on foot after crashing into utility pole on Jefferson Avenue

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police are looking for a hit-and-run driver accused of knocking down a utility pole on Jefferson Avenue overnight.

Wednesday shortly after midnight, a 2002 Dodge truck, traveling in the southbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue, crashed into the pole, just north of Mercury Boulevard and knocked it down, according to Newport News Police Department Sgt. Randal Bailey.

Bailey said the driver of the truck then fled the scene, leaving the truck behind.

As a result of the accident, both directions of Jefferson Avenue were shutdown and Dominion Virginia Power was called to the scene to repair the damage.
