PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police officers will soon be equipped with body cameras.
Taser International, the company that manufactures the product, said they are ready to ship out the cameras and operating system to the Portsmouth Police Department.
The city previously approved the purchase of 220 body cameras for its police officers. It will cost nearly $300,000 to start and more than $730,000 over the next five years.
Portsmouth police say there is still work to be done behind the scenes, including the implementation of an official written policy, but they hope to have the cameras operational by the end of the summer.
