Hatteras firefighters battle wildland fire

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – National Park Service staff and multiple volunteer fire departments Saturday are working to manage a 20-acre fire north of the village of Avon, N.C. and south of Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

No injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire was first detected around 11:00 p.m. June 12 on the soundside near power line poles. The fire quickly spread east because of southwest winds. Route 12 was closed to traffic from 11 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. this morning.

Fire crews continue to secure a fire line and are working to extinguish it.
