VDOT worker seriously injured in I-664 crash

CHESAPEAKE, Va, (WAVY) – An early morning crash on I-664 in Chesapeake Saturday left a VDOT worker seriously injured.

The department said around 12:30 Saturday morning Safety Service Patrol worker William Nichols stopped to assist a motorist on the right shoulder of I-664 underneath the Portsmouth Blvd. overpass. When Nichols got out of his car, a 2007 Dodge Charger ran off the road and hit him.

Medics responded and took Nichols to a local hospital with major injuries. Saturday afternoon he was listed in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. On Monday morning, he was upgraded to serious condition.

Police charged the driver of the Charger, 46-year-old Yancy McIntyre, with reckless driving and defective equipment. Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

One lane of traffic was closed during the incident.
