PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth’s only free boat launch is now closed to the public, and it will likely stay that way for much of the summer.
The signs went up at Portsmouth’s City Park Thursday. On Friday, the city says barricades will go up preventing boaters’ access.
This comes one day after 10 On Your Side cautioned boaters about the broken ramp. The city says potholes have formed in the concrete. In recent weeks, there have been reports of boats nearly tipping and trailers getting stuck.
Renovations are expected to start at the end of July and will take two weeks to complete, according to city engineer James Wright.
Dozens of boats were expected to launch at the site for this weekend’s big Harborfest event. Now they’ll have to find an alternative way into the Elizabeth River.
