Driver dies upon impact with tree

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police is investigating a single-vehicle accident in Middlesex County that resulted in a fatality Thursday morning.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya said troopers were called to the crash scene on eastbound Route 615 around 11:20 a.m.

Investigators determined 67-year-old Henry James Stump was traveling east on Route 615 in a 2000 Ford Ranger when he crossed the center line and ran off the road. Anaya said Stump’s vehicle crashed into a tree, just east of Route 17.

Stump died upon impact, despite wearing a safety belt, Anaya said. Investigators say alcohol did not play a factor in the crash.

It remains unclear what caused the crash.
