NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police say they have arrested a 12-year-old boy and 15-year-old boy after they allegedly stole a woman’s SUV at gunpoint.
Investigators say the woman had just pulled into the parking lot of the Heritage Forest apartment complex in the 900 block of Forest Lake Court when she heard footsteps and was approached by a young boy with a gun, Wednesday around 12:42 a.m.
The juvenile demanded the victim’s cell phone and car keys. He then fled the area with another male juvenile in the victim’s Honda CRV.
Around noon the same day, the victim and a friend spotted the stolen vehicle in the Southeast Community and contacted police. About 30 minutes later, officers spotted the vehicle near 26th Street and Orcutt Avenue.
“At the time, the car was moving and it was occupied by five individuals,” said Detective Holly McPherson, with the Newport News Police Department. “When they spotted police, they jumped out of the vehicle and took off running.”
The driver and a passenger were both apprehended and charged with carjacking, robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony. They are being held in juvenile detention.
Police say the age of the suspects is concerning.
“It’s very disturbing. They are out in the middle of the night or early morning hours armed with a weapon,” McPherson said. “They’re looking for a victim.”
But police it’s a good thing they didn’t get away with it: “A lot of times they progress,” McPherson said. “If they get away with it one time, it might continue on progressively and get more violent.”
