Tides run away late, open series with win 7-2 over Chiefs

NORFOLK (WAVY) – Catcher Steve Clevenger went 4-for-4 at the plate, with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Norfolk Tides past the Syracuse Chiefs, but most of the Tides’ scoring didn’t come until the eighth inning.

Leading 2-1, the Tides put up five runs, two from bases-loaded walks and three from the Chiefs’ defensive blunders. Facing Orioles’ infielder Ryan Flaherty (on rehab assignment with an injured groin), Chiefs pitcher Rich Hill put one in the dirt, allowing Darial Alverez to score from third.

Flaherty followed that up with a deep fly ball to left-center field, which both the left and center-fielder nearly botched. Darin Mastroianni had to slide for the catch, allowing both Julio Borbon and Paul Janish to score from second and first, respectively.

The same two teams play on Tuesday at 6:35.
