JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — State police say a man died in a four-vehicle crash on Monticello Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Around 1:45 p.m., a 2008 Chrysler 300 traveling west hit an unmarked state police car that was stopped at a traffic light, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Upon impact, the state police vehicle was pushed into a 2014 Hyundai Sonata, and the Chrysler overturned and hit a 1999 Ford pickup truck.

Anaya said the driver of the Chrysler, 84-year-old Donald Lee Howard, died at the scene. Howard was from Ashland, Va.

The state trooper in the police vehicle and his K-9 were not injured. The woman driving the Hyundai was transported to a local hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, Anaya said.

The crash scene is on Monticello Avenue at the Marketplace Shoppes intersection, just west of Route 199. Virginia State Police have finished investigating the crash scene, and the road has been reopened to traffic.
