Neighbors: Miami Court shooting stemmed from recent argument

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach police confirm one person was shot in the 5600 block of Miami Court Sunday night.

On Monday, evidence of violence lingered on Miami Court. A single gunshot silenced the whole neighborhood, a gunshot police said struck Raymond Beck in the leg.

Residents in the neighborhood told 10 On Your Side tensions began brewing a few weeks ago between Beck and 28-year-old Donald Rockett, who lives just down the street. They said Rockett had a disagreement over Beck’s driving.

“He claimed that Ray tried to ram him,” said George Cornell, a friend of Beck. “They ended up having an exchange of words.”

Neighbors said Beck went over to Rockett’s home Sunday around 9 p.m., and the two got into another argument. They said things escalated, and one witness claimed Beck threw a rock at Rockett’s girlfriend. That’s when witnesses claimed Beck charged toward the home and Rockett fired a single gunshot.

“That was definitely a shot, I thought,” said neighbor Mason Van Fossen. “Something’s going on. I took off down the street, seeing what’s going on, then come to find Ray laying in the street.”

Rockett’s neighbors told 10 On Your Side the shooting was in self-defense, but Beck’s friends see it differently.

“The guy pulled a gun out, didn’t fire any warning shots,” Van Fossen said. “He never said, ‘I’m in fear of my life’ or anything. He just aimed down and fired.”

Beck has been treated and released from the hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Rockett was arrested and charged with felonious assault. He is being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
