Newport News police: Man fired shot, officer almost hit

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police say an officer was nearly shot Wednesday by a man who killed himself.

Police said the tactical situation was at a residence in the 700 block of Adams Drive. It all started around 4:30 p.m. with a 911 call from a relative about a man inside a house threatening suicide.

The first officer at the scene knocked on the door and announced herself as Newport News police. Police say the man refused to come outside and then fired a shot through a window of the house, near where the officer was standing. The officer was not injured.

Additional units were called in and then the tactical operations unit was called in around 5 p.m.

Police say the man was dead when officers eventually entered the residence. No on else was inside the home.
