MANAMA, Bahrain (WAVY/AP) — The Navy confirmed a Sailor assigned to the destroyer USS Farragut died after falling from a hotel balcony in the Gulf nation of Bahrain.
U.S. 5th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Kevin Stephens said the Sailor died Saturday evening during a non-combat related incident while on liberty. The Sailor was identified Monday as Petty Officer 3rd Class Devon J. Doyle, 21, of Alamosa, Colorado.
USS Farragut was docked in the island nation’s capital, Manama, as part of a routine port visit.
A Navy spokesman told WAVY.com there are no indications of foul play in the Doyle’s death, but the Navy is cooperating with Bahraini officials to investigate.
Bahrain is the longtime host of the 5th Fleet, and many hotels, restaurants and bars cater to Navy personnel near the base.
The USS Farragut is based in Mayport, Florida and is part of the strike group accompanying the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. The group is supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, which includes the Roosevelt conducting air strikes against the Islamic State group.
