Suspicious device deemed to be a hoax

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Chesapeake officials determined that the suspicious device found Saturday near Woodland and Arlean Drive turned out to be harmless.

At 3 p.m., police and fire units responded to the device found in the street.

Captain Scott Saunders with Chesapeake Fire Department confirmed the device was described as a glass container wrapped in duct tape with wires protruding from it. The device was about a foot away from the curb.

Due to the appearance of the device, Virginia State Police Bomb Squad was requested to respond. After examining, the bomb squad determined the device was just a harmless hoax.

Chesapeake Fire Marshal’s Office will be conducting an investigation to determine who made the device and placed it near the intersection.
