SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A work truck driver has been charged after police say he crashed into a school bus in Suffolk Friday, sending three people to hospitals.

Christopher Wells, 32, of Gates County, N.C., was charged by Suffolk police with failure to stop at a red light.

Police say the crash happened around 7:10 a.m. at the intersection of Portsmouth Boulevard and Suburban Drive.

The Isle of Wight County school bus that was involved in the crash had just dropped students off at John F. Kennedy Middle School, so there were no children on board.

The bus driver, Jennie Boykins, suffered critical injuries, and the bus aide, Clarestine Cypress, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Both women were taken to nearby hospitals.

Wells was airlifted via Nightingale to a hospital with critical injuries.

On Monday, Suffolk police said Wells and Boykins, 67, of Zuni, were both listed in fair condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
