HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — There’s a new campaign to bring awareness to the fight against Lyme Disease — and it started right here in Hampton Roads.
The movement is spreading across social media and involves people taking the Lyme Challenge. It’s a lot like the social media campaign against ALS, where people dumped a bucket of ice water on themselves and recorded it. This challenge requires sucking on a piece of lime and recording facial reactions.
“It’s an international grassroots campaign to raise awareness to how much of an epidemic it is. About 300,000 people a year get the disease, and that’s only the documented ones,” said Ozlem Jones, a local advocate for the fight against Lyme Disease.
The campaign was started by five women from across the country, one of is local and has Lyme Disease herself, along with her son.
