NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An Old Dominion University student told police he was robbed at gunpoint last week, but detectives now say he made it all up.

The 20-year-old student went to the ODU Police Station on May 6 around 2 a.m. to report the alleged crime. He told officers he was walking in the 800 block of West 46th Street around 1 a.m. when he was approached by a man with a gun.

During the course of the investigation, police say the alleged victim admitted to falsifying the incident.

On May 9, the Norfolk Police Department charged the student, Jerry Haywood, of Norfolk, with filing a false report to police, which is a class-one misdemeanor.
