NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk City Jail will soon become an all male jail to ease overcrowding.
Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe says the city jail currently houses about 100 women inmates, who are kept on separate floors. Under jail policy, men and women inmates must be kept separate, causing the men’s floors to become overcrowded.
McCabe says the number of female inmates have been significantly lower, so to ease the overcrowding issue, deputies are moving about ten women inmates each week to the Hampton Roads Regional Jail in Portsmouth.
Officials say they will gain 20 single cells for disciplinary and mental health inmates. The extra cells will help reduce fights inside the jail.
The Norfolk City Jail is the largest in the Commonwealth averaging about 1,300 inmates daily.
