Man taken into custody in Portsmouth after pursuit

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police say one person was taken into custody at Cumberland Avenue and Turnpike Road after a pursuit, Thursday morning.

Portsmouth police chase suspect vehicleAccording to Portsmouth police detective Misty Holley, at 10:33 a.m., there was an officer heading eastbound on Airline Boulevard when a tan pickup truck turned in front of the officer, nearly causing an accident.

The officer then stopped the driver and asked for his license, but the man said he was not licensed. Holley said, at that point the man drove away and almost ran over the officer.

During the chase, the truck crashed into a silver vehicle. That driver suffered minor injuries.

The pursuit ended about 10 minutes later near Turnpike Road and Rodman Avenue. Police then arrested the driver, 41-year-old Douglas L Copeland.

He was charged with felony eluding, felony hit-and-run, assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, driving while suspended third or greater offense and failure to yield left hand turn.
