NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY/AP) — A Newport News fire official says crews are working to contain a spill in the Small Boat Harbor on Terminal Avenue.

Battalion chief Stephen C. Pincus said an adjacent business reported a potential oil spill around 11:10 a.m. Monday. Responders found a dense black film on the water. Right now, the substance that spilled is believed to be a petroleum product, Pincus said.

In a news release, Pincus said the size of the spill and the spill’s source have not yet been determined.

The Newport News Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team and Marine Incident Response Team are working to deploy booms to contain the spill. Absorbent booms and pads are also being used to absorb the substance from the water, Pincus said.

An environmental clean-up contractor has been called in, as well. The U.S. Coast Guard and Virginia Marine Police also responded to the spill.
