NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit will gain more than two dozen new buses by the end of the year.
The HRT governing board agreed to purchase 32 new 40-foot buses Thursday, making this one of the largest bus acquisitions in the agency’s history.
Officials say they are working hard to replace older equipment in order to enhance travel experience. They say the average age of HRT’s fleet is 9.9 years, but more than 44 percent of the buses are 11 years old or older.
The new buses will be divided among the north and southside fleets and the first buses are expected to arrive in December.
The 32 buses are worth about $14 million.
