Hampton police say they were called to a residence at the Church Creek Apartments, located in the 3700 block Kecoughtan Road, around 6:20 a.m. The caller made a complaint about a man with a gun, but the responding officers were not able to locate him at the scene.

Minutes later, police dispatchers received another call for the same complaint and then officers still at the scene heard two gunshots coming from inside an apartment.

SWAT and hostage negotiators responded to the scene and made contact with the suspect via telephone. Police say the man, 28-year-old Shawn David Mattera, surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m.

Mattera was charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling and cocaine possession. He remains in Hampton police custody.

During police negotiations with Mattera, adjacent apartments were evacuated. According to police, it appeared no one else was inside the residence with him. According to police, he was unarmed when he came out of the apartment.

No one was injured.
