Driver jumps out of car after brakes fail on I-264

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a woman caused a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 264 Wednesday morning after she jumped out of her car when her brakes stopped working.

Virginia State Police says the driver of a 2002 Jeep Cherokee, Jasmine Curbison, was heading westbound on I-264 when she attempted to brake, but her brakes failed, shortly after 6:30 a.m. She then jumped out of her moving vehicle and onto the road, causing a multi-vehicle accident near Witchduck Road.

Police say a 2011 Honda minivan attempted to avoid hitting the woman, but instead crashed into the Jeep. The Honda was then struck from behind by a 2001 Saturn, the Saturn was then struck by a 2013 Hyundai. A BMW also veered off the road and crashed into a jersey wall.

Police say four people suffered non-life threatening injuries. Curbison was charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain proper control of vehicle.

The crash caused major traffic delays during the morning commute. The scene was cleared shortly after 8 a.m.
