NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A fallen utility pole blocked southbound Jefferson Avenue at Woodfin Road Wednesday afternoon.
A 4 p.m. vehicle crash, just south of the Woodfin Road intersection, caused the pole to fall across all southbound lanes of traffic, according to Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston.
Crash scene investigators say a vehicle stopped in the left southbound lane and a vehicle directly behind it was not able to stop. In an effort to avoid the stopped vehicle, the driver of the second vehicle swerved and hit the utility pole, causing it to fall.
Thurston said there were no injuries. Officers redirected traffic around the crash scene until it cleared around 5:30 p.m.
Dominion Virginia Power crews were still at the scene fixing the damaged power lines around 5:30 p.m.
