SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk police arrested a man they say snatched a woman’s purse at a Wal-Mart and then tried to force someone to be his getaway driver.

Investigators say it happened around 2:30 p.m. Friday in the store’s parking lot off North Main Street. Police say Jamar Thomas Colbert, 23, snatched the purse, jumped into a car and tried to push the driver’s leg onto the gas pedal.

That made the car back into another vehicle, so police say Colbert ran away. Officers caught him a short time later in the 200 block of Mulberry Street.

Colbert was charged with robbery, possession of marijuana and failure of passenger to report a crash.
