Hampton police: Medical condition caused fatal crash

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police’s Crash Reconstruction Team has determined a medical condition caused a single-vehicle crash that left a man dead Monday.

Hampton Police Communications got a 911 call around 12:45 p.m. about a the crash in the 200 block of Admiral Court, near Howe Road, according to Sergeant Jason Price. At the scene, responding officers found a single vehicle with a driver who was in critical condition.

The male driver, 82-year-old William Fairland, of Hampton, was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Price said.

Right now, investigators believe Fairland was driving a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis south on Howe Road when he experienced a medical condition that caused him to loose control of the vehicle. Price said that’s when the vehicle crashed through a fence and into a tree.

The Hampton Police Division tweeted a photo of the scene showing the charred vehicle and the fence it had crashed into.
