Teen pilot killed in small plane crash in Orange County

ORANGE, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a 16-year-old pilot died after a small plane crashed in a field in Orange County.

The 1974 Piper single-engine fixed-wing plane crashed Sunday morning east of the Orange County Airport.

State police identified the pilot as Ryan Lee McCall of Spotsylvania. He died at the scene.

McCall was the plane’s only occupant.

The cause of the crash hasn’t been determined. State police, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

State police say the plane was owned by William Rushing III of Springfield.
