NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A porch fire at an apartment building on Kimball Terrace in the Chesterfield Heights section of Norfolk displaced four people Sunday morning.

Norfolk firefighters responded to the 3000 block of Kimball Terrace around 5:50 a.m. after receiving a call from a person who said their neighbor’s porch was on fire.

When crews arrived they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the porch that was attached to a two-story apartment building. The four people who live in the apartment managed to get out unharmed.

Firefighters worked quickly and brought the fire under control in about 13 minutes, according to a fire department spokesman.

Although the fire was contained to the exterior of the building, the interior was damaged by smoke and water, leaving one apartment uninhabitable.

The Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority is assisting the four who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
