HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police have arrested a man accused of hitting a woman and her baby with his truck and then fleeing the scene on foot Tuesday.
Just after 1 p.m., the woman was walking along Hall Road with a baby when they were hit by a black Nissan truck, according to Public Information Officer Ashley Jenrette with the Hampton Police Division.
Stacey Wright and her husband were in their garden when the mother and her baby were hit. They saw the mother pushing her infant girl in a stroller.
“We waved to her, and two seconds later we heard her scream, a crash and my husband took off down the road,” Wright said.
Wright and her husband took care of the victims until medics and police arrived. Wright and other neighbors said it is a miracle the child and mother are expected to be OK.
“The stroller was demolished,” Wright said. “And her bottle, her sippy cup was embedded into the ground.”
The woman and the baby were taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to police.
A family member of the victims told WAVY.com the mother ended up with a broken wrist. He said the baby, who is just a year old, has scratches on her face.
Jenrette said the driver left his vehicle and fled the scene, near Glenhaven Drive, on foot. Officers later located and arrested the driver, Joseph Walton. He was charged with felony hit-and-run and reckless driving.
