18-year-old shot in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — An 18-year-old Newport News man is in the hospital recovering after police say a 15-year-old shot him on 31st Street Sunday afternoon.

Newport News police say around 2:34 p.m. officers received a report of a shooting in the 700 block of 31st Street, near Madison Avenue, in the city’s East End. Police responded to the area and found the 18-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound.

Medics took the teen to the hospital where he is expected to recover.

Police say with the help of a witness, officers located and detained a 15-year-old suspect. The teen has been charged with possession of a firearm by a juvenile and maiming/malicious wounding.
