Hampton upsets Norfolk State in MEAC semifinals 75-64

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY/AP) — Quinton Chievous had a season-high 23 points with 16 rebounds and Hampton upset No. 2 seed Norfolk State 75-64 on Friday night to advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.

Saturday’s MEAC final will match sixth-seeded Hampton (15-17) with No. 5 seed Delaware State (18-16). The Hornets upset top-seeded North Carolina Central 63-57 in the other semifinal game.

The Pirates took the lead for good at the end of the first half with the last four points for a 36-33 advantage. Hampton stretched the run to 10-0 to start the second half with an early nine-point lead.

“As a man, as a coach, as a guy that works for Hampton does beating Norfolk make it a little sweeter? Yeah, by all means,” Hampton coach Ed Joyner said. “You get bragging rights for the whole year, this is for everything, this is what we came for.”

Reginald Johnson’s layup with 7:11 left gave Hampton its biggest lead at 57-43. But Norfolk State (20-13) answered with a 7-0 run and got as close as 67-62 on D’Shon Taylor’s free throws with 42 seconds left. Hampton made 6 of 6 free throws from there.

Taylor led the Spartans with 16 points.
