NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police say one person is dead and one is injured after two tractor-trailers and three vehicles crashed along Interstate 64 in New Kent County, Wednesday morning.
Troopers say the accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-64 at Exit 211, around 9:22 a.m.
According to police, the eastbound traffic had slowed down due to a disabled vehicle at the 214 mile marker. As an eastbound tractor-trailer approached traffic, it struck a pickup truck in the right lane, causing it to spin and strike a van. The pickup ran off the right side of the shoulder as the van collided with the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then struck a Chevrolet work truck and struck a Pontiac, pushing it into another tractor-trailer up ahead, say police.
The driver of the Pontiac, Jennifer Wilson, of Richmond, died at the scene.
The driver of the first tractor-trailer, Ira Vestal, was charged with reckless driving.
One other person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening, say police.
All eastbound lanes were closed and traffic and detoured onto Route 60 at Exit 205. Shortly before 4:30 p.m., State Police said they were in the process of reopening the lanes.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who might have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Trooper M.D. Jester at 804-553-3445.
