ODU hoops team preps for C-USA tourney

(WAVY) – Old Dominion will open up play in the Conference USA Tournament down in Birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday when the Monarchs take on Middle Tennessee in quarterfinal action.

Middle Tennessee defeated Charlotte to advance to the quarterfinals. ODU has not defeated the Blue Raiders since joining Conference USA, but they come into the tournament the hottest team in the league after closing out the regular season with 6 straight wins.

With an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament by no means a guarantee, this is the time of year when coach Jeff Jones squad really needs to step up, and there’s no pep-talk needed.

“Well to be honest at this point of the season if we are having to motivate the guys to come out and play hard, then that’s probably not a good sign,” said coach Jones.

“I think these guys will be motivated on their own, they understand what’s at stake, it’s one and done from here on out you’ve got to be ready, I’m a big believer that the aggressor is the one that eventually comes out with the win we want to come out with opening tip, we want to come out in the first five minutes of the second half in every contest from here on out and try to establish ourselves as the more aggressive team.”
